Teaching

Truth cannot be reached through any organisation, belief, teacher or technique. He asks people to observe their own minds directly, in daily life and relationship, without choosing or judging, and questions the division between the observer and what is observed. 1, 2, 4

Who it is for

For people who want to look into fear, thought and relationship for themselves, without a tradition, method or teacher.

Life and places
  • He was born in May 1895 in Madanapalle, in the south of India. 8
  • He and his brother Nitya first came to Ojai, 80 miles from Los Angeles, on 6 July 1922. 12
  • During the Second World War he could not travel and lived quietly in Ojai; in later years, without a home as such, he spent more and more time in Ojai, at Brockwood Park and in Madras (Chennai). 3
  • He gave his last talk in Madras in January 1986 and died in Ojai, California, on 17 February 1986. 11

Where to start

  • The Core of the Teachings (1980) is a one-page summary he wrote himself, free on the Trust's website. Freedom from the Known (1969), edited from his talks by Mary Lutyens, opens the Trust's list of introductory books. 2, 5, 7
Public context
  • Brought up by the Theosophical Society as its expected World Teacher, he dissolved the order built around him in 1929. 1, 9
  • He spoke around the world for more than fifty years and founded schools in India, England and the United States. Foundations in England, the United States and India publish his work. 3, 6, 10
